Stylish Productivity

My mother-in-law, a professional organizer, is always telling me to spend a little extra money on things for my office that make me happy. Her reasoning is that I will be more likely to use the space and increase productivity if I enjoy the things in the room. She's SO right. I find that I am now way more productive in my home office than I was 6 months ago when I was reusing my white college binders and random baskets and bins I had thrown together on some shelves.  My Erin Condren planner, colorful pens and turquoise and red accessories make me want to stay organized and use my space for what it is.

This concept came full circle this past week when I installed an amazing built-in design for a adorable couple in Apex. Both husband and wife work from home a couple of days a week and simply did not have a space that was adequate for any of their needs. Working from one desk, a couple of filing cabinets and no surface for spreading out paperwork -- you can imagine the mess and stress!

This before and after picture explains it all...

As with any new project, I start by taking my client's concerns and put together an inspiration board to start off our selections and design. I knew with their personality that they could pull off these bold colors. A husband that lets his wife do pink is a winner in my book.

After expressing the need for a built-in desk design, I got together with my carpenter to design a work surface that the couple could use simultaneously. The design incorporates two work stations, adjustable shelving, filing drawers, concealed storage in cabinets and drawers for pens and office accessories.  The space wasn't quite finished without a built-in by the windows. Not only does this provide a craft table and seat for their little girl, but the top of the banquette lifts to provide more filing and storage.
